Most teams discover their Kubernetes bill grew 30% in a quarter where traffic was flat and shrug it off as "cloud getting expensive." It is not the cloud. It is that Kubernetes bills you for the capacity you reserve, not the work you do, and the gap between those two numbers has been quietly widening in your cluster since the day you set resource requests too high and never looked again.
The cruel part is that everything looks healthy. Pods are running, dashboards are green, autoscaling is on. The bill climbs anyway, because a green dashboard tells you nothing about the difference between the CPU you reserved and the CPU you actually burned.
The number that hides behind "it's running fine"
The mental model that lets the bill drift is that a healthy cluster is an efficient one. Pods scheduled, no crashes, autoscaler active, so surely you are paying for roughly what you use. That assumption is where the money leaks, because Kubernetes scheduling is driven by resource requests, and requests are reservations, not measurements.
When a pod declares requests: cpu: 1000m, the scheduler sets aside a full core for it on a node whether the pod uses 50m or 950m. Your nodes fill up with reservations, the autoscaler adds more nodes to hold the reservations, and you pay for every node. The bill tracks reserved capacity. Actual usage is a separate number almost nobody charts, and in most clusters it is shockingly lower than the reservation. The post-mortem version: a team copied a requests: cpu: 2000m, memory: 4Gi block into a Helm chart template, and every one of 60 microservices inherited it regardless of actual footprint. You are renting reserved capacity, not compute

Attack the reservation gap in order of impact:

Right-sizing is first because it is the largest and safest when driven by measured usage. The fix is reading real consumption and setting requests just above true peak, not copying a generous default:
